Sisters. Brothers. Mamas. Daddies. Grandpas. Grandmas. Uncles. Aunts. Cousins. Nieces. Nephews.
Maybe your family is big. Maybe it’s small. Maybe it’s happy. Maybe it’s dysfunctional. But I’ll guarantee you one thing:
It’s not perfect.
Mine isn’t. I used to think it was, but how is that possible when families consist of just humans – broken, sinful people who let one another down? And the more people there are in a family [mine now numbers 22 with sisters, brothers-in-law, brother, nieces, nephews, and parents], the more there are to let you down.
But at the same time, the more there are to love you and to uphold you and draw closer to you. God is so in the business of redeeming families and He loves doing it because families are His plan for this world … His plan to demonstrate His perfect love on this earth. And no matter how the world tries to redefine family or break it down or tear it apart, I am fiercely committed to fighting for and preserving family … because I’ve seen how beautiful it is & I believe in its power to change the world.
And that’s why I feel so compelled to devote time in prayer for all the precious people God has given to me whom I call my family – because we need the power of God to love one another, grow in relationship together, and encourage one another. The devil will try to pull us apart, but I pray against his sway, knowing that our God is stronger.
Maybe your family is going through some insanely difficult times. My heart breaks for all my dear friends whose families are suffering right now. God can heal. It may take years, but He is there and His power is real.
Maybe you have so much hurt from your family that you can’t even talk to them or see them. Take it to God in prayer … His heart breaks along with yours and He longs to see relationships restored.
Or maybe your family is in a beautiful place right now … praise God for His blessings & pray for strengthening in Him for the days ahead.
And may our own hearts toward our family be like it says in Philippians 2:1-4:
“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Prayer Postures for Today:
– Pray for each one of your immediate family members individually
– Pray for restoration of broken relationships
– Pray for forgiveness and healing of past wrongs
– Pray for strengthened family bonds and specific ways to grow in unity
Because like Toby Mac says in his song “Family,” I still believe in family. And I believe God still has a purpose for all of our families present or future.
Father, thank You for these people whom I’ve grown up with and am privileged to call family. Let me never take them for granted and let me continually be working on building up relationships with them. Help me to forgive and love deeper than I ever have before. Use us for Your purposes, I pray.
