Being content with this moment in the right now of today is always a huge struggle. And if anyone has thought more, talked more, prayed more, and been worried more about the future, it’s this girl. It seems like I’m always planning for something … or thinking about “getting through” whatever I’m currently on so I can get to the next thing. “What To Do With My Life” seems to be the title of the book I’ve been writing these past few years. But recently, God has been teaching me so much about living right now and being content with it.
One of my favorite quotes says this: “How simple it is to see that all the worry in the world cannot control the future. How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and that there will never be a time when it is not now.” (Gerald Jampolsky)
Never be a time when it is not now … how simple it seems, yet incredibly wise. Why do I forget it every day I wake up? The future IS now. Certainly yes, we must plan in advance for things to happen, which is only wise, but ultimately how those things turn out is up to God. He is the one who holds the strings of tomorrow in His hands – we only get to live our part in the stage of today. No matter how much I worry about tomorrow, it won’t change what actually happens.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Candle flame flickering at my bedside table.
The clink of glasses in the background.
Morning sunshine gleaming in.
Almost-finished tea at my side.
Leftover curls on my head.
God’s Word at my fingertips.
Marinate in it.
Prayer Postures for Today:
– Pray for wisdom for future plans, but then let them go. Entrust them to God’s almighty plan and let Him do what He’s best at – taking care of the future.
– When worry arises about things coming up (even tomorrow), release them to God in the name of Jesus. Accept His grace for this moment.
– Take the time to notice all the little blessings of life around you right now. Rejoice in the fact that He has made you live right now, and if you spend too much time thinking about what hasn’t come yet, you’ll miss the beauty of the life you’re living.
God, please forgive this anxious heart who thinks that she can somehow make the future better just by worrying about it. I give it to You. Thank You that You have a plan far better than my own, and help me to rejoice in this very moment of life I’m living now.
And like Tenth Avenue North says, help me just to “Let It Go.”
