Day 14 – Treasures On Earth & In Heaven

Would I be an oddball if I said that money scares me? I know, most people greatly enjoy money and all that it brings their way, but I’m scared to death of the stuff. It’s most likely due to the scarcity of it growing up, and henceforth a proper teaching of how to handle money at a young age. Yes, my mother has taught me well, and the value of a penny has never been lost on me. So then, why should I be scared of it?

More accurately, I suppose I’m scared of spending money. Because every time I spend money, there goes some that I could have saved for something else. Or spent on something more worthwhile. Hmm, that sounds rather miserly to me, now that I think about it.

Either way – whether we hoard our money to ourselves and obsess about not having enough and barely spend any at all – OR – we freely splurge on whatever suits our fancy when we get money, not giving any thought to the future – we aren’t trusting in God to provide for our needs. We’ve made the money our own to do with as we please, instead of viewing it properly – as a gift from God, given to us to provide for our own needs and those around us.

What a struggle! The lust for money and pretty things in this life will never be done. It’s a sneaky serpent that creeps in when we’re least expecting it. But God speaks specifically about money in the Bible, and He also promises that He will always provide for our needs. If He can care for the little sparrow and clothe the flowers of the field that are here one day and gone the next, can’t He also provide for our needs? How I need to trust Him more!

1 Timothy 6:17-19 gives us this reminder:
“Command those who are rich in this present world

[and stop here: if you’re thinking this doesn’t apply to you because you’re not rich, think again of how you live in a country that is far richer than most of the rest of the world]

not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

May we learn to be wise stewards of what God has giving it, neither loving it nor fearing it. God is in control, not our money.

Prayer Postures for Today:
– Thank God for the gifts He has given you in the form of money
– Pray for a greater trust in and dependency on HIM to provide for your needs, not yourself
– Release any control over your own money and possessions and set your heart on your true treasure, Jesus Christ

Father, my times are in Your hands. I know that You will provide for my every need … all that I have belongs to You anyway. Thank You for providing for me in the past and the present – I trust that You will continue to do so in my future. Please help me to use what money You’ve given me wisely, not misering it away and not squandering it either. I belong to You, Jesus.
