Five Years Past

The “Ides of March” Series … Prompt #3 – “What this day was like five years ago.”

The year was 2009. That was the year after Capernwray, the year I took off from college to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. Unfortunately my meticulous journaling did not happen to record the exact day of March 3, 2009, but the entries before and after give a clear picture of what life was like for 21-year old me.

CYT had just done “Cinderella,” and I wrote effusively of my joys in haunting the Bing and watching the delight on cast members’ faces as they performed. I certainly had no time for school as was evident from my plans for Dancing with the Celebrities, my Core Drama class, Dad’s 70th birthday party, a trip down to Boise, shows to frequent, and Awana to be a part of.

But one of the sweetest memories of early March was Maggie’s birthday party. The one where we were escorted from our cars to the table and were served by “two dashing young fellows in tuxes” … the one with the steak dinner and a puppet show for entertainment … the one with games and strawberry shortcake … the one where we put on warpaint and went to fork the Taylors’ yard at midnight … the one where we woke to small children’s feet pattering above us and got to play with them while waiting for a pancake breakfast. It was a beautiful time filled with joy, love, laughter, and dear, spontaneous friends.

And to think that this is the year that that dear birthday girl friend is getting married, and I get to stand up next to her while she does – what a blessing and an honor! How thankful I am for friends that last a lifetime.
