Maybe It’s Better That I Should Live Alone

Maybe it’s better that I should live alone

 Maybe it’s better

That I should live alone –

That silence soothes my tired brain

As I walk through my morning routine.

Maybe it’s better

That I don’t have to worry

About sharing shower time

Or kitchen space as I race the clock.

Maybe it’s better

That the grocery bill is lower,

The laundry loads less frequent,

The house not as dirty.

Maybe it’s better

That I can wrap myself

In my favorite shows and books

To wind down at the end of the day.

Maybe it’s better

That I don’t have to

Force conversation

When I’m running on empty –

Or have another person

Snoring next to me in bed

Or have to ask him

Where he wants to go on vacation.

Maybe it’s better

To have this open time

To carry out

All that God wants me to do.

Maybe it’s better

That I should live alone.

Maybe it’s better that I should live with you

Maybe it’s better

That I should live with you –

That I should hear your voice

Murmuring good morning as I awake.

Maybe it’s better

That you make my tea

As I shower

And I cook an extra egg

For you as you shower.

Maybe it’s better

To have more food in the cart

So I can share my meals with you –

And to have your scent to inhale

As I fold your shirts.

Maybe it’s better

To wrap myself in your arms

At the end of the day –

To wind down together

As we share our highs and lows.

Maybe it’s better

To have you

To hold my silence

With gentleness and comfort,

Knowing I’ll hold yours as well

When the time comes.

Maybe it’s better

To curl into the warmth

Of you as I fall asleep –

And get excited about

Traveling to new places together.

Maybe it’s better

To carry out God’s dreams

With another person

Who is just as committed and

Passionate about them as I am.

Maybe it’s better

That I should live with you.
